The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 final between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) was held at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, and it turned out to be a one-sided affair as MI emerged victorious with a 7-wicket win.
DC batted first and set a target of 132 runs for MI, but they could only manage 131/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Meg Lanning was the top scorer for DC with 35 runs off 29 balls, including five fours. However, the rest of the DC batters failed to contribute significantly, and the team lost wickets at regular intervals. In the end, Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav played a crucial role in adding 54 runs for the last wicket partnership to take DC to a respectable total. Pandey scored 27 runs off 17 balls, including three fours and a six, while Yadav smashed 27 runs off 12 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes.
In response, MI chased down the target in 19.3 overs, thanks to the unbeaten half-century of Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored 60 runs off 55 balls, including seven fours. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also played a significant role in the chase with her knock of 37 runs off 39 balls, including five fours. Jess Jonassen and Radha Yadav managed to take one wicket each for DC, but it wasn’t enough to stop MI from winning the game.
Hayley Matthews was the standout bowler for MI, taking three wickets in her four overs and winning the Purple Cap race for most wickets in the tournament. Issy Wong also picked up three wickets, while Amelia Kerr scalped two dismissals.
Overall, it was a convincing win for MI, who outplayed DC in all departments of the game and deservedly won the WPL 2023 trophy.
